SUSAN AYDAN ABBOTT

ARTIST STATEMENT

By looking inward, my work explores hidden, silent secrets, finding outward expression for the legacy of physical, sexual, spiritual and emotional trauma. The strength in my recent work lies in the fearless expression and embracement of my own personal truth and darkness. My artwork focusses on bringing darkness to light, to be seen, uncovered, purged. Making aware the many who are invisible and struggling to be heard, my pieces expose social issues in a visceral, raw, uncut, brutal yet sensitive manner using a variety of mediums. The distinct aesthetic and sensibility of my work complements this subject matter, creating naked emotion with a savage and formally inventive approach to material and process. I question suffocating trauma and stigma through my own personal lens.
